This article was written based on the actual step documented in recovering files from a broken Virtual Machine Hard Disk Drive(VHD).

We are working on a system in collaboration with other developers. I used to work with Oracle Virtual Machine called VirtualBox where I used in testing and debugging the system.

During system integration with other developers, the virtual machine encountered an error and unable to start properly. I did try numerous solutions posted on the internet but epic fail. I was totally upset about it that I could not retrieve the files. I explored the Windows 7 Disk Management Tool settings and tried several steps until BINGO! it works.

The goal is to recover all important files in the Virtual Hard Disk (VHD) needed in the system.  Follow this simple visual guide in attaching your virtual hard disk drive to your local machine.

1. Access Computer Management by right-click on Computer from the Windows Explorer.

2. Notice the attach Hard Disk on the Disk Management labelled as Disk 0, indicating the amount of partitions in each drive.

3. To attach our Virtual Hard Disk into the Disk Management Tools, right-click on Disk Management then select Attach VHD.

4. Locate the file of your Virtual Hard Disk.

5. On the selection box, leave the checkbox Read-only uncheck to perform read-write operations with the virtual hard disk selected, click OK.

6. You will be prompted that your Virtual Hard Disk Drive is now active.
    
7. Now you can recover your files on your Virtual Hard Disk Drive like a simple Hard Disk Drive connected on your PC or laptop.
